• Question: Why don't you invest the money more productively to increase the facilities or research into improving PET imaging? To reduce the risk of severe problems with the image quality?

If you’re referring to the money I would get if I were to win this then there are a couple of reasons why I wouldn’t invest them into more research. The first is that I’m pretty sure that I’m An Engineer wouldn’t let me use the prize money to fund my own research 🙁 the money is to invest into further projects like this to reach out to young people. They’d tell me off for sure!

The second reason is that this field of research is VERY expensive; a single scanner is likely to cost more than £100,000 and then there are the costs of running them. The research required to develop the next generation of scanners is likely to cost millions. £500 wouldn’t go very far I’m afraid.
