I wanted to become an engineering because it is an exciting and innovative profession that impacts all aspects of life. Engineers help to solve problems from building bridges to developing vaccines so I thought it would be fun to be part of the next generation of engineers that will continue to make a difference to society.

I was inspired by a mixture of my own surprise at my academic achievement and my interest in electronics.

I have always been interested in science, computers and electronics. However I never really thought of myself as ‘University material’ until I started seeing that I was getting good grades at school. I came to realise that I’m capable of so much more than I’d anticipated and decided to go for it! I loved making the various projects during my electronics GCSEs and haven’t stopped making stuff ever since.

When I was younger (Primary School) I always enjoyed making things, I had this book on how to make science toys out of plastic bottles and cardboard, I read that book so many times the cover wore out, as I went through school, engineering became the obvious choice.

I really liked science and finding out how the world works, but I wanted to make a practical difference. Engineering is a good combination of using science and maths to solve real world problems.

Good question, Emily. For me, that’s easy (although the decision definitely was not easy at the time!). The two main reasons for me wanting to be an engineer were (and are):-
      1) I wanted to do something where I could keep learning forever, and be good at learning it (and I’m relatively good at learning physics).
      2) I wanted to help people.
