I’m afraid I don’t know many famous engineers apart from Isambard Brunel. I think for most engineers I know it is the areas which they specialise in or the way things work that inspires them rather than individual people.

I can’t think of many famous engineers either; they seem to remain rather anonymous. Some that come to mind are Claude Shannon and Richard Hamming; they were computer scientists and engineers that did work on modern communications systems and standards. Perhaps find a field that interests you and learn about the pioneers within that field.

      Here’s a list. I like lists.
      – James Dyson, British engineer (although he studied art but whatever, everyone says he’s an engineer) and inventor.

      – Joel Gibbard, a guy who 3D prints cheap prosthetic hands (I only discovered him while researching this).

      – Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone.

      – Alan Turing, father of artificial intelligence (technically he was a mathematician by training but the film about him is good).

      – Bill Nye, the science guy.

      – Elon Musk, crazy rich entrepreneur and CEO of SpaceX and Tesla cars (both of which are awesome).
